What if you got up bright and early in the morning to start your day with a nice workout session in the gym, just to find out that the gym does not open until late afternoon. These are the issues students at CSUMB face regarding the gym located in the Otter Sports Center.

The Otter Sports Center is one of the recreational facilities available on campus that includes the Aquatics Center, Student Recreational Field, and the Disc Golf Course. However, it can be argued that it is the most crucial facility out of the four due to the fact that it is available to all levels of ability without being part of a club.

Currently, the Otter Sports Center provides weights rooms with free weights for strength training and a cardio room with cardiovascular equipment such as cycling, treadmill, Stairmaster, etc. Unfortunately due to the pandemic, equipment and services such as equipment check out and locker areas and showers are unavailable at this time and until further notice.

When entering the gym students are required to wear a mask when entering the

building and during the workout. Students are also required to show their Otter ID card at the reception to a member of staff and scan a barcode that leads them to a significant health and safety form that verifies the fact that they do not have any symptoms rela ting to Covid which you have to fill out on the spot and show it to a member of staff once you have completed the form.

Naroa Alcaidd who is one of the students of CSUMB who goes to the gym three days a week stated that “The gym is a place for me to disconnect from my worries and release tension. It boosts my mood and energy. Instead of opening at 4 pm, it would be nice to be able to go already in the morning,” This is just one example of CSUMB students being inconvenienced by the opening hours of the gym which opens from 10 am to 10 pm on the weekends and 4 pm to 12 am during the weekdays.

The issue with the opening hours seems to be a common sentiment amongst students as another student, Tiegan Pascall who goes to the gym regularly four times a week claimed, “The gym is an important hobby to me since it helps me stay motivated and consistent. It is a way I like to practice setting goals and working to achieve them. For me, the opening times being earlier would make it easier to make use of time on campus since I live on the east campus. I also think that more machines for legs would be a good improvement for the gym”. Feedback provided by the students on campus can give really good insight on steps the university needs to take to improve upon its facilities.

Nevertheless, some students such as Jack Geisregen disagree. “For me, the gym is a place where I can de-stress while working out and listening to music and I don’t think that there is a lot that the gym needs to do to improve”. Geisregen however has reduced his gym schedule to once a week as he has evening classes which makes going to the gym very challenging.
